Born in Sri Lanka Charmaine now lives and works in Edinburgh where she graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a BA(Hons) in Painting having previously gained a BSc(Hons) in Mathematics and a MSc in Software Technology. She has also practised astrology, divination and shamanism for a number of years.
Charmaine's work is inspired by ideas of randomness and order as reflected in the ubiquitous fractal forms in nature and in applying such concepts to the creative process. The evocation of a spiritual reality is an underlying concern.
A complex of spiritual ideas, including alchemy, sacred geometry, shamanism, prehistoric art and altered states of consciousness inform the work, as do analogous ideas found in modern scientific fields, such as quantum physics, chaos theory, genetic algorithms and neural networks. The symbolism of networks also relates to the connective mystical worldview and so is a recurring theme in her paintings, along with nebulous colour veils, invoking air and water to create a numinous ambience. Charmaine has exhibited at the RSA in Edinburgh.
