A 2008 graduate in Painting and Printmaking from Glasgow School of Art, Michelle has always been interested in making paintings made up of loose brush marks and bold colours. Photorealistic paintings are not Michelle, as for her, the excitement comes from applying paint very loosely in a direct manner thus creating a somewhat vague image of the subject.
Her main influences come from times passed, in particular her childhood, with many of her paintings recreating a memory from that time in her life, where objects can serve as a shrine almost, for something or someone lost. Michelle uses an emotional attachment with the subject matter to produce work which often includes a spontaneous addition coming from her memory, instinct or intuition. Her direct approach can be described as quite childlike - illustrating objects with bold brush strokes and large blocks of colour.
The result is quirky imagery fuelled with nostalgia.
